Just got word about a small float tube event at Laguna Niguel Lake. I've never fished the lake and don't know much about it, but since it's only 10 min away from home i'll probably hit up this event. Although it's catch and release only and cost $45 it includes a BBQ lunch.

Here is the info.

I think it closes fast, small lake fills fast but well worth the money. I have to work but I will see if I can figure something out for this one.

Well apparently they had some nice prices last year donated by several sponsors, but not sure if they have anything this year or not. Still waiting to hear back from rick one of the owners.

It's limited to the first 50 people and NO boats so if you want to go call Kheia at 949-493-8900 and just get your name on the list. You don't have to pay until the day of the event which is nice.

Work is more important?? Wow I don't think I'll ever feel that way.

Even though I stand to loose over $200 if I call in sick I'm still gonna fish!

At one point in my life work was more important than recreation, family and friends. Then I realized the hard way the best things in life is free and decided to quit the stuffy office job in LA and moved back to OC. Now I work for a small family owned company. Although I have a lot of vacation time I'm all out so I'm forced to call in sick whenever I want to go fishing during the week.

Along with the $45 you have to pay to get into the park it's in. And 50 float tubers is alot on that lake especially when you get all the fly guys with two rods out trolling around bouncing midges. And the fish only stay in about 3-4 areas so the tubers will not be spread out all over the lake. Also if this lake even gets a little rain a day or two before get ready to be fishing in mud/tea stained water where only powerbait works... which you can't use that day. But they do get quality fish there that are good eating but it's also c&r that day.

I love fishing that lake but I'd save your $45 and only spend around $25-$30 to fish it on a regular week day after the event.

It's $45 to fish all day with NO additional fees (the state requires a $3 entry fee, but they return $2.50 the max the state allows to be refunding) and the $45 includes a FREE BBQ lunch. The event is ONLY for the first 50 float tube guys meaning NO shore fishing and NO boats allowed.

I thought about going on another day, but then you have a TON of shore and boat guys in addition to all the float tube guys. Either way i'm in so i'll be glad to take pics for those that can't make it. Plus if the fishing is that good i'll just return that weekend and fish again.

I hope I'm on the water by then. Usually early in the season because the water is warm the trout head off shore anyways, so the shore guys usually don't fair as well as the tubers and boats. Or they resort to making ridicules haymaker casts to try and reach out. It would be nice to fish without them. They make it difficult to launch and land. I usually launch off the dock. I haven't been in a couple of seasons and I understand there is a new concessionaire ( who is actually a former concessionaire) who has improved things since the last one.
Couple of points,
It is a city park and my recollection is that they had a machine operated parking gate so bring some small bills.
Also I don't think they have a food license so bring your lunch. They sold bottled drinks but that was about it.

Like I said ,I hope I am in the game by then, would love to attend.

PS
What is the date?

Not sure if your thinking about the same lake. This one is a private lake in Laguna Niguel just off the 73 fwy and they are charging $45 and have a BBQ lunch. You might want to check out the flyer and link on page one to be sure.

Checked the flyer, and yes it is the lake I am familiar with. The Lake is within the Laguna Niguel Regional Park. ( it is essentially a park pond. But a really good one!) Sounds like your parking is included. It is normally $3.00 and it used to be a gall darned machine, that gave me fits at 5:30 in the morning. Must be a new system now ( thank God ). Barbecue lunch included ? Well there ya go ! I think the best feature about this event is, NO BOATS AND NO SHORE ANGLERS!! The bad thing is it's on a Tuesday.
Oh well..., Besides being boatless at the moment I also work in the craziest business under the sun so I can't commit that far in advance. So at present count me out. But, I know that lake very well and as we get closer I will post what little advice I can about fishing there.

So it is the same lake?? For a second I thought you where thinking about laguna lake in the city of Fullerton. I actually got the flyer and thought it was that lake and noticed the address was not the same. I know that's a park lake. Well when I talked to the owner he said it's a "special event" so no extra fees, charges, or permits like the regular fishing days. The still haven't decided if it will be a tourny or not so hopefully it will. I've got a short list of suggested lures that I'll be ordering pretty soon in preparation since I've almost never fished for trout before so any and all tips will be greatly appreciated.

LGHT one thing you will want to use in that lake is 2 and 4 pound mono or fluro, not sure how dirty the lake is right now so you might not need fluro. If you go mono and the lake is dirty enough it will stain your clear mono brown or greenish brown so if you can't find it in clear don't be too afraid to use green.

I have had incredible success using chartruese or orange 3" power worm on a size 10 bait hook light wire using a small split shot 18" up the line. Flip it out and drag it around. Also berkley makes a mouse tail with a white head and orange tail that I have had good luck on. all on 4lb floro. I always fish two poles at once with many double hookups! I also use a small white grub that works good no more than two inches. Hope it helps!!!!! I will try and make it out

Well the one and only time I went trout fishing this year I used 2lb mono with a 2lb leader. I was thinking that was too light so was considering moving my 2 small poles up to 4lb line and leader just in case I get into a good sized fish, since I really haven't learned to "play" a fish without putting too much stress on the line.

Here is what I was suggested so far (in no particular order)

Lip Ripper Z spoons (Siberian Tiger)
Thomas Buyoant (Red/Gold)
Rapala Countdown #5 (Rainbow and brook trout patterns)
Panther Martin PMRG (black w/ yellow spots/Gold blade) in size 2 and 4
Berkey Trout Teasers
Kastmaster
Trout Traps
Snot Rocket or Fruit Cocktail Lip Ripperz jigs

The only thing I have on that list is a few lip rippers and a few kastmasters so I'll probably have to hit up bass pro or tacklewarehouse to see if I can find everything at one place.

Honestly bro you can find all of that stuff at walmart and sport chalet and at worst maybe head out to Orange and hit up Jimmy's Outdoors or Long Fin. No need to do a BPS voyage unless you want to. What part of OC you in? I'm in Mission Viejo maybe we can meet up and I'll do a tackle run with you to get some of this stuff and a few things they didn't tell you =).
