I went to 2 different spots this weekend, Saturday down the Tualatin River and into the Willamette River, and then Sunday back to Hagg Lake. I started noticing a frustrating trend, I would set the hook and after 3 to 5 seconds I would lose the fish. This happened well over a dozen times these two days. Now, to update everyone on equipment: I currently carry 3 rods, 2 spinners and a bait caster. all are 7' medium. Only once did I lose a fish on the bait caster, all were predominantly on the spinning rods. Now I want to get everyone's opinion, but here's what I think might be happening:
1. Dull hooks. I have all new tackle this year so that's out.
2. I'm using too small a hook for the soft bait I'm throwing. The hook isn't able to tear through the plastic to get into the fishes mouth.
3. Wrong line. I use a 30lb braid with 10lb fluoro leader on bait caster, 20lb braid with same fluoro on spinners.
4. Wrong rod. As mentioned, all but one loss came on spinning rods. 7' Medium, but the action is so much that it doesn't seem to able to break the hook out of the plastic and into the fish.
Personally I feel it might be a combination of [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] & [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]. My bait caster, even though we can't get a full hip turning hook set from the float tube, seems to be stiff enough to get the job done while the spinners bend in half and even though I'm reeling to beat heck, the torque I'm creating is inadequate. Any thoughts on this are welcome. Thanks.
