Hey everyone, I was wondering if their are any products that help prevent rust after sharpening a hook. I usually use a black sharpie but I was wondering if their was something else you can put on the exposed metal and last longer than the sharpie

I have been using a sharpie as well.
I don't recall where I read it, but it seems to work for a season or two.

I've heard using WD-40 is always good to use on your hooks. Very Happy

Never thought about this but if I was to paint/sharpie my hooks I would just use a paint pen.

Rinse with fresh water after use then air dry or manually dry. I've heard of some people using rice or silicone packages (like the ones that come in electronics) to keep the moisture out.

sharpies are great!! honestly, if there's salt, there will be rust. Best way to deal with it is to rinse and dry then store with silicon packets. I've used those tackle boxes with the "rust stopper" dividers and they don't seem to work for me, so all I do now is rinse and dry before packing it away. I only use silicon packets for those lures with rubber skirts that have seen the salt, so mainly my salmon spinners.

Last time when I was on the water I harpened a hook fished the lure for a bit than stuck it in the rod rack a couple hrs later it was rusty. I always rinse and dry my gear and tackle when I get home

Only a couple hours later Shocked

I tell you about this long beach water...That's crazy. I've never noticed rust that fast.

I did a little search and found this tid bit,"Toothpicks". Toothpicks are wood that has been kiln dried so they absorb moisture well. maybe this is a simple fit for most of us I might try this out.

Right! That's why I never eat fish inside the harbor.

2hrs that's insane , you got me all paranoid of the water in harbors now . The seals would have been no worries to me on my first voyage out . Now i have to worry about becoming radioactive

If you spend enough time tubing the Harbors here Wes you will grow and extra foot which means 3 find in the water. This just means extra control and speed for fishing the salt buddy, its all good.

I also found this if you have loose hooks, apply talcom powder it will help absorb any salt moisture that may rust them while being stored..

I think there are some good ideas here, I will be trying some of them for myself, if you try some of these report back and let us know how your method works.

I've had luck using the vapor release strips and wipes on my tackle and my tools at work especially machining tools.

Interesting topic, I've always had a problem with rusty hooks myself, but never have tried any of the mentioned tips to slow the rusting on the hooks. Most of my fishing is done with leadheads and I usually always have them pre-rigged in the tackle box, which part of the hook is inbedded into the plastic swimbait and serves as some slight protection to rust. But fishing in the salt is brutal to your gear. I ALWAYS, religiously rinse down all my gear that I used for the day, including the baits i tossed. Then leave them in the yard or driveway to dry up, then I put them away. To be honest, I still have some rusted hooks from time to time, so I'll have to try one of the mentioned tips above!
