Since I was in the vicinity for research, I went over to Lake Gregory to do a recon for possible weekends fun, as well as getting the stats.
** Float tube is allowed now. Launched and land from boathouse, after signing all the paperwork for quagga mussels and liability. $10 charge for checking and paperwork. All day starting from 9am to 5pm.
May 9, 2012 recon results:
The lake has an increase volume of water from the local icemelt, and a bit of spring water.
Wind blowing from northeast to southwest at max speed of 7mph on the east side, and 4mph on the west side.
Air temp at 86°F, and water temp at 67°F at surface down to 1ft below surface.
Bass and trout were jumping all over the north side, near the Trout Cove and Dam, snatching bugs. Local trout holdover exceed 16", at 2.3lbs, caught along the east bank.
Green sunfish and bluegills were all over the shallow sand beds on the east, south, and west sandy coves. Local tubers hauled in at least 25 panfish limit, with at least 7 trout. Bass were also caught, but less than 2lbs. Catfish were getting active around 1PM and later.
Baits used and tried by the locals around the lake's shores: Nightcrawlers on basss. 1/3 tail segment of crawler and chartreuse and rainbow powerbaits for trout. Plastics tubes on a #6 to #12 size hook for panfish. Sweet corn, masa dough balls, sour bread, and Velvetta cheese balls for catfish.
Best flies to make and use: Black spider foam on #18 to #23 hooks for trout or #8 to #12 for panfish. Red and black ants no longer than 1cm long and 0.5cm wide. Small black soldier flies no more than 1.5cm long, with 2cm expanded wingspan.
