Hey guys,
Ok,… I am officially toonless. I just sold my Buck's Bronco the other day. I sold it with virtually everything on it including the wheel rig, the electric motor (plus a brand new battery, and charging system) spare set of 8' toons,… everything. The only thing I kept was my new Lowrance meter, my Force Fins and my waders. I will be selling ALL of my fly gear very soon. (rods, reels, flies, fly tying materials,…everything!)
Now,… I know this may sound odd considering the UNBELIEVABLE year I just had fly fishing in the Eastern Sierras. But!.. that is exactly why I am divesting myself of all my old gear. I am starting fresh! I need to step up my game!
As many of you may well know I have been researching, the idea of building my own toon. I have spent many hours researching, made many phone calls, and have yet to see anyone in the toob and toon business who is looking forward to what I believe is the future of sport fishing in this state. The days of the gas engine motor boat are numbered, particularly here on the Left Coast, and especially for the inland waterways. The future (I believe) is electric or human powered craft. Toobs and Toons. I have learned a great deal about frame design, toob design, manufacturing processes and materials. I believe that the time for the next step forward in toob and toon design is here. The materials and processes are out there. someone just needs to step forward and do it. Unfortunately the market is small (growing, but small) and the incentive to step forward is as small. As well it is heinously expensive at present.
So,… I have rid myself of the old, hoping that it will encourage me to make every effort to pursue the new. I have a plan, and a design, that will use some of the present designs, (the toons) and will incorporate my own new frame designs. Gonna start slow… I hope to have my new boat afloat by spring for testing… (and fishing). I am hoping to build two boats. One for me and one for testing and use with my friends. I hope to sell both after testing is complete, and take the next step.
I also have plans (designs) to completely re-design the pontoons themselves, but after approaching several manufacturers I am resigned to wait until it is more affordable.
OK,…. on to the next step.
