I LOVE topwater bass fishing!!!

pop....pop........pop.....pop....SLAM!!!!

I just bought one of them weedless frogs...can't wait to use it. I have a Spook i bought for the bays though...wanna catch me a nice corvina this year. And i have a few random poppers here and there....my favorite is this little 3-4 inch black one i got in the "sale bin" at sports authority...that thing is nice!

My first top water fish was a striped bass on a Rapala Skitter Pop....that got my heart beating like crazy!

i also like when its just so random when out of no where a fish comes and splashes everywhere and get your bait.

I like making poppers out of wood, i just cant seem to get the painting right. i have a few that i have made on my desk but i have yet to paint them.

Last summer was fishing the IKA as a top water. It will hop like a small bait fish that is chased. I really thought I was on to something but then one of the guys let me know they have been doing it for a while. Pretty cool technique just the same. Top water strike is great.

I like to fish top water at first light and just at dusk. It helps to give a good pause between pops to let the fish zone in. With frogs it is important to let the fish really take the bait. Hard to do with the excitement but the hook up ratio will be better if you can give the fish a chance to get the whole thing in its mouth.

Shallow non suspending jerk baits are very similar in approach as top water as you can jerk the bait for a short dive but allow it to return to the surface for the hit. Makes a good splash on the dive too.

I read once to get more hook sets on the top water, make sure you are not watching your bait. If your eyes are on the bait you tend to react to fast as pull the bait out of the fishies stick zone. If you are looking at something else (say eye candy Shocked ) you have a slower reaction time which is better for hooks sets. I tried this and it worked for me I had a few more hook sets and a few husbands that got pretty angree at me. lol!
Hey what ever gets you more fish is what I told them.

I'll have to try that technique Jeff. I am guilty of watching my bait like a hawk! Maybe I'll do better following your advice. study
