If you could take only one lure to fish any SoCal harbor, what would it be? Right now my favorite is a 3" big hammer in Bay Smelt color.

Warblade aka switchblade....hands down!

Not only does it catch big spotties....but anything that hit's that bait (big or small) hit's it so hard that the first bite of the day scares the crap outta me.

Yup what Miller said. I used to fish spinner baits all the time but one day I was getting bit a lot and couldn't connect. My buddy was using the warblade and because it's more compact he was connecting with almost every fish that hit his bait. Even big spotties will miss spinnerbaits sometimes, they're mouths aren't as big as that of a LMB Sometimes the fish prefer a spinnerbait over the warblade but from my experience the warblade is the way to go most of the time.....it caught me my PB spotty @ 20".

Massfisher,
What I have found with fishing sprinnerbaits with miss hook ups is that the spotties are hitting the blades and not body. once your hit and no hook up, throw the reel into free spool and let the bait fall back down to the bottom, wait for sec and start to bring your bait back in again and you should get hit. If you dont get hit throw your bait into the pocket again and hold on.
Thats what usually works/happens for me anyways but I will say, fishing down there is not the same here.

Thanks Miller...fishing may be a tad different here but it's worth a shot.

Next time I'm fishing with a partner using a warblade I may give this a shot and see how it works. Often times the spinnerbait will draw bites from bigger fish. I do have days though when the SB is getting hammered (and connecting with) dinks.
