Better late than never for this report. Me and a buddy went on a night session on Monday the 17th. We got on the water around 730-745 to an out going tide. We launched our tubes from 64th street and kicked to our normal fishing spot around the docks and rocks in front of Ballast point. This spot wasnt producing like it normally does, only a couple short bites. So we rode the tide out and fished along the Jetty and caught one 11 in sand bass. Again it was pretty slow so we kicked across the channel and fished the other jetty and still the fishing was slow for me, but my buddy was killing them.
We decided to change things up and fish some open water and thats where our luck changed. We found a nice patch of water around the point infront of the yacht club. This spot produced for the both of us. I ended up with five fish in this spot, the largest being a 15in spottie. I probably lost just as many or more fish then i landed. That is light line fishing for youi.
Our session ended around midnight. What started out slow ended up being a pretty good night. One thing i learned is the open water fish tend to bite a little different from the fish hanging on structure. Once we figured this out we hooked more fish.
The baits used were the 4in gulp minnow in Rainbow and the 3in Gulp shrimp in Molton. I had these baits rigged on a 3/16 oz coolbait lures head in blue shad. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
This is the picture of the 15 in spottie. Caught on a 6 foot Daiwa VIP smallmouth bass rod rated 4-8 poind line with a TDSol2500 loaded with 15lb braid and a 8lb seagaur red label leader. Fun night on the water.
