3/27/20 Newport Bay

fished 6 to 11am in newport bay. 24 fish caught, 1 calico bass,3 sand bass, 16 spotted bay bass, 4 smelt. 3 legal fish, 1 calico and 2 spotties. beautiful day, almost no wind.

It might just be my old eye balls ... but that top photo looks more like a Kelp Bass to me.

For example: It's checker board pattern is just not prominent nor very clear.

But perhaps I may be miss spoken ... and I stand waiting to be corrected. Be gentle with me folk's ... please!

I caught a few KB and reported on them in my last couple of reports.

It could be a kelp bass, I have no idea what a kelp bass looks like lol, I'll research the local bass. But was a very nice day good weather and nice fish

I always thought Kelp and Calico were two different names for the same fish. Paralabrax clathratus

i just researched kelp bass and they say that calico bass is just another name for kelp bass but that they are same fish

I purposely post Calico's and Kelp Bass next to each other in my reports so that people can see their common comparisons but then ... they look so different when they are shown right next to each other.

Well ... I guess that's my going the extra mile and it didn't pan out for me this time ... no one seemed to have noticed! Hmmm!
