Does anyone have any plans or ideas for a float tube rod holder for the old style flyrod and reel set up where the rod does NOT have a rod butt sticking out beyond the reel seat? (see pic below)  I'm trying to plan out how to make one for this old Fenwick FF 70 rod.  Most newer rods have a 2" bit of rod butt that will work in most holders.  Anybody?

The only type of rod holder for this is the Scotty Fly Rod holder, which I have two. The Wonderods only has 1" worth of butt, similar to yours. The cool thing is, the fly rod holder can hold both the fly rod and the regular. Perfect for my float tube setup.

I don't want to buy one Leo, I wanted to make one out of PVC, and at an angle that would be suitable for trolling. Yeah, I've seen that Scotty holder already. It looks like it would be a very tight fit, with the butt just barely in the holder. Plus, it's fairly expensive.

I got mine for $15, which pays off in the long run. I made a few in the past to mimic the design using a 1.5" PVC, angled at 35° (hot air gun and bending the hell out of the 45° elbow), with the gap not larger than the gap of the reel's connective base. However, creating a securing method can create a scratching edge if you're not careful, and may also be detrimental to your gear during a powerful jerk from an expected large swallower (ie. cat/carp). You can mimic that fast metallic securing harness similar to the Scotty design, using an aluminum cross piece (rather than a rubber band). It will require you to use the router tool quite a bit.

It is called DOWN LOCKING. The still make them. I have made a few, just a personal choice.

It makes no difference in a rod holder made for FLY ROD. Scotty is my choice but a PVC pipe that will clear the cork grip with about a 3/4" slit cut down about half way down a 12" pipe then a notch in the side of the slit so the reel drops to the side like this but with straps instead of suction cups

Komori,

Did you ever come up with a solution for this?

Jerdon, use a tee, probably 1 to 11/4 inch PVC "TEE". Below the tee use a 45 degree coupling. You may want to glue in some short pieces of pipe to extend the tee to hold the rod safely. How to hold it in place will be the challenge, being their is no butt to the rod. Then again, you can just buy one.........GT scratch

I just use the slotted PVC method for a stand up mount only.

I always hold my flyrod when trolling but I also just use 1 rod.
